Bodrum Castle and Underwater Archaeology Museum: A Gateway to History

Bodrum Castle: A Legacy of the Knights

Built between 1406 and 1523, Bodrum Castle was constructed by the Knights of St. John and is often referred to as the “Castle of St. John.” Situated between two harbors on rocky terrain, the site was originally an island in ancient times but was later connected to the mainland to form a peninsula. The square-shaped castle spans dimensions of 180x185 meters.

The Five Famous Towers: The castle features five towers, each named after a different nation:

• The French Tower: Standing at 47.5 meters above sea level, it is the tallest tower.
• Other towers include the Italian, German, Snake, and English Towers.

Historical Gates: To reach the inner castle, visitors pass through seven gates. Above these gates are coats of arms featuring symbols like crosses, dragon figures, and lions, representing the knights.

The Ottoman Era and Castle Transformation

Although Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror sent a fleet to capture the castle in 1480, it was not until 1523 that it fell into Turkish hands. During the Ottoman period, the castle served as a prison for some time. The seal of Sultan Mahmud II is one of the elements that mark the Ottoman influence.

Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum

The castle was opened as the “Bodrum Museum” in 1964 and was renamed the Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum in 1981 due to its extensive underwater findings. It is Turkey’s first and only underwater archaeology museum and is among the few of its kind in the world.

The museum received the “Special Commendation” award at the 1995 European Museum of the Year Competition. Today, only the Uluburun Shipwreck and select sections are open to visitors. The castle also incorporates stones from the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, displaying unique artifacts retrieved from underwater excavations.

Halicarnassus: The Ancient Neighbor
